On 19 September 1893 Aotearoa became the first self-governing country in the world where women could vote. But the road to get there was anything but smooth.
So… How did it happen? Well that’s a wild ride from the French Revolution, through the colonisation of Aotearoa, to battles over booze, to ultimate victory.
In this episode we discuss:
- How New Zealand's first parliamentary election had far more liberal voting rights than in the UK.
- The role of Māori women in decision making before colonisation.
The global suffrage movement.
- The rise of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union and the role debates over alcohol played in the battle for suffrage.
- The story of Kate Sheppard and her allies in the campaign for suffrage.
- The story of Māori suffragists including Meri Te Tai Mangakāhia.

The Aotearoa History Show S2 | E14: New Zealand's Pacific Empire | RNZ

Through much of the 19th century NZ politicians and administrators dreamed of running a vast empire in the Pacific. Parts of that dream came true - although for some, it was more like a nightmare. Today, Aotearoa has fewer Pacific possessions that it once had, but the history of our attempts at colonial expansion has effects which continue to reverberate throughout the Pacific. It seems an almost heretical question, but it’s gotta be asked! Why are NZ and Australia different countries? You might be surprised to know that we did consider joining up with our mates across the Tasman back in the late 19th/early 20th century, but it never worked out. And that’s just a small fragment of the fascinating history of our Trans-Tasman relationship with our mates across the ditch...

New Zealanders like to think we have a “Number 8 Wire Mentality” - a rough and ready enthusiasm for fixing and building stuff with limited resources. From the first Māori arrivals who worked out how to grow tropical plants in our cold, wet climate - to modern scientific breeding and robotics, New Zealand agriculture has always been at the cutting edge. But innovation isn’t always good news for ...

All aboard for a voyage into the history of New Zealand’s railways! From a standing start of little tank engines chugging along wooden rails, New Zealand built a vast rail network, made up of enough steel rail to wrap halfway around the moon. If our rail network was once so massive, why is it now a shadow of its former glory? For more on this subject: Can’t Get There From Here by Andre Brett Tr...

For more than 30 years Aotearoa was beset by warfare as Māori hapū and iwi made use of new gunpowder weapons to settle old disputes with rivals. It’s estimated 50 thousand people were directly affected - killed, injured, enslaved, or forced to migrate from traditional lands. These conflicts had a massive impact on everything from the Treaty of Waitangi, to the battles of the New Zealand Wars. T...

Moriori history has often been twisted out of shape over the years, much like some of the trees on Rēkohu bending in the strong winds. The stories of these remote islands and the people who made their home there go back centuries, but they've been misunderstood and misinterpreted for nearly as long. Moriori are not the first people of New Zealand, they weren't forced out by Māori and they aren'...

    10:50 --- "Ngāti Tama and Ngāti Mutunga used a European ship to sail all the way from Wellington to the Chatham Islands where they conquered and enslaved the peaceful moriori people" Understatement of the year…. Moriori survivor recalled : "[The Taranaki invaders] commenced to kill us like sheep.... [We] were terrified, fled to the bush, concealed ourselves in holes underground, and in any place to escape our enemies. It was of no avail; we were discovered and killed - men, women and children indiscriminately." "……the invaders killed a 12-year-old girl and hung her flesh on posts" 3:52 ---- "Māori had no frame of reference for people outside of New Zealand and it was hard to imagine the people who didn’t understand the nuances of ceremonial warnings in peaceful greetings" History is messy.

    Pou, as in pounamu is a beautiful and rich sound that is very rarely pronounced well. Our lazy pakehafied lips now tend to pronounce pou as pau. It's sad because the ou sound is a beautiful sound in maori. Think of the Rereahu stream Ourongomaipoho, the Hauraki River name Waihou, such poetic sounds but so seldom heard.

  • @stephenking4170

    The pronunciation of the Maori letter T by this lady is a well intended effort to use traditional pronunciation, but it isn't yet perfected. It sounds too much like a European letter D. The Maori T is pronounced with the tongue flat on the upper palate, a good cm of the tongue on the palate, not just the tip. My father, Takarangi was a Maori language tutor in the 1960s, with fastidious attention to pronunciation, having gained his reo from Waikato and King Country Maori elders from the 1930s. Maori is a beautiful language and when pronounced in tune, it is music to the ear.

    More woke propaganda. Seems the verbal history by Maori is being written out of existence. A lot of other people were in NZ before Maori. So they are descendants of colonists just like most New Zealanders today.

    • @eeeaten
      @eeeaten 9 днів тому

      no, that is fantasy nonsense. science shows the first people of nz were the eastern polynesian ancestors of maori who began arriving from around 1250AD. some tribes have histories of other people being here before them, but that's because maori did not all arrive at once - obviously later arrivals found people (also maori) here before them.

    • @DanMac-lh7tl
      @DanMac-lh7tl 9 днів тому

      @@eeeaten That comment about science is the first warning about the invented history. We have all seen what paid science will provide. You need to talk to Maori who clearly identified in their verbal history about meeting Australian Aborigines living in Taranaki and the South Island. As well as multiple peoples before them. So Maori is a colonising people like all ancestors of New Zealanders. What is a concern in New Zealand, is so much proof, of other people, is being hidden by Government. Even the old DSIR, scientists dated the Moa hunters evidence in Hastings, to 7500 years ago. Yes that evidence is still in existence. Much more than that exists. So trying to sell a history that is not true, about the first people arriving in 1250AD is the fantasy. You can't keep avoiding the truth. Unfortunately for the story tellers the evidence is already available and more is coming to light.

I do think this situation will get better, even if it does yet takle another generstion or so. Hopefully sooner. it would be beautiful should the Taranaki communities who are rehabilitating the land and land use in their area, and considering their brutality historically against Moriori,, may be the ideal folk to assist Moriori in reviving land use customs and indigenous plant and animal re-introduction, since Taranaki have that expreience. Now THAt would be beautiful! I gave the feature a 'like' even though some parts were a little contentious in their presentation. Maninly because it does act as a starting point for some folk. And, the comments below add otherr angles for us to consider. if you pray? Maori, moriori, european? This is a fine issue to prat about for good resolution.

So Maori got beaten at their own game that they themselves was 'valid' in the 19th century but modern maori cry about it? All races were at that stage once upon a time, and we shouldn't feel embarrassed enough to downplay the thing or justify why we did certain things or blame the pakeha. The missionary accounts are reliable as, they did witness kaitangata, and they weren't the only ones to record it Maori themselves used to write their own memories of it.Kaitangata wasn't about protecting yourself from Atua this is kaka and some modern Maoris attempt to find a reason for it. Kaitangata Maori revered it. They loved the taste of manflesh but more importantly was the mana and degradation aspect of revenge. Many war slaves were eaten whenever as well long after battles, so this shows a pure culinary aspect too. Also, you talk about Te Pahi in Sydney saying why are they going to hang a man for stealing a pig lol this is so stereotypical Maori viewing theft as a normal thing. You using it as an example to make the Maori look not as savage is not necessary and also void because if a slave had stolen a pig in a Maori kainga he would be killed and eaten over it . Te kikokiko rekareka o aku hoariri, nga umu whakakia tatau koopu ki te utu.
